Lori and I went and saw Supernova at the oakdale theatre last night. It was very cool , and a lot of
fun. For those who don`t know , Rockstar Supernova was the Rock version of american idol where
contestants sang in competition to win the front man job for the band consisting of
Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and ex-metallica bassist Jason Newsted.
Lukas Rossi , the winner , brought his unique growling voice , along with his amazing falsetto , and general rockstar attitude to last nights show. I thoroughly enjoyed the show , Lukas as front man transforms the "hard pop" music mostly written by tommy lee and clarke , into a new sound. Lukas also performed his own song that I loved , Head Spin , that he wrote with his former band Rise Electric. Listen to it here performed on the show.
Dilana , the chic that came in 2nd I think , maybe 3rd opened , followed by Toby the Aussie , and then Dave Navaros band Panic Channel. Dilanas set was without a drummer , just 2 guitarists one of whom apparently was Magne ., a contestant. She sang some originals and a great Black Crowes cover , She talks to angels , she definitely nailed it ... she has a wonderfully diverse voice and style. Lori thinks she should`ve won ....she thinks the men were scared of a woman singer.
Tobys band was o.k , kinda what I expected . Hard poppy crapola , sung pretty well with good energy. Nivarros band had a couple songs I recognized and I thought it was pretty cool. Lori felt it was 80`s music only slightly updated.
Finally SUPERNOVA , Damn that was fun. Lukas just captivates you with his unique voice and quirky stage presence. There were a couple of songs that stood out esp. his Head Spin song , as well as a ballady song that entranced you. He performed a Rossi-style version of Bittersweet Symphony that was just tons of fun. I really enjoyed the concert , I will admit that some of the songs written were not written with Rossi in mind , Toby or even Dilana would`ve made it sound more mainstream as was the spirit it was written in , Lukas at times doesn`t sound like he is singing in the english language , though his emotion drips with every syllable . I think the band
picked rightly in Lukas who , as hinted, will play a bigger part in there next album. He transforms everyday mainstream rock into something unique , palpable and emotional. I would call it Grunge EMO . Lori I`m sure would disagree.
My other complaint , that Lori would definitely agree with , is that in the end we thought Dilana
would`ve sung a song with Lukas during the encore which was disappointingly short. Dilana should`ve had more performance time , she in our minds , was a close 2nd if not possibly the best singer of the bunch. I would`ve enjoyed more of her .
All in all , I loved it ....Bought the CD on the way out .. The CD tames Lukas a bit and may make him more accessible to the average fan.

The State of the Union
Here is a link to the presidents State of the Union address
The president has excellent speech writers. I enjoyed his speech , I enjoyed his nod to our first female house speaker ( democrat pelosi) , I enjoyed his occasional conciliatory tone in response to the new democratic majority.
I thought he could have done more. He could`ve congratulated the democratic house on its first 100 hours initiatives and told them he looked forward to signing the minimum wage bill , the ethics lobbying and budgeting rules changes , the anti-terrorism bill etc. Especially since these are minor measures that have popular support that a veto wouldn`t fly ...it would`ve been easy to say < Hey I`ll work with you "
Instead , this speech just repeated his previous objectives only in better rhetoric. He still wants to change Social Security , push Health care on individuals , Protect his base with tax cuts , expand on the controversial no child left behind act , drill for oil in environmentally protected areas , INCREASE the war effort despite the opposition , I find it funny that now he wants to limit bipartisanship since they lost the majority. "Can`t we all just get along" after 6years of thumbing his nose at the democratic voice is insulting.
Nothing has changed , only the rhetoric.

Manning Makes it to the Super Bowl
Peyton Manning lead his team to 32 second half points to beat his (and my) archrival patriots. This was one of the best comebacks I have seen in playoff action. Peyton Manning still has to win the super bowl to officially get the camel off his back but getting there is a start.
Bill Parcells retired from the cowboys today , probably because of the severe disappointment of the fluky playoff loss where Romo , the emerging franchise , blew the snap of the game winning field goal . Football has its ups and downs, persevering tough times , tough decisions , disappointing prospects , working your ass off...developing talent , putting it together , getting to the playoffs , Beating a good team and getting to Kick the winning field goal then doohhh .... !!!
Mr Parcells may have just had his last stab in the heart , loss
Miss ya Bill

Finally some results from Democratic Power
Bush gets court oversight for surveillance program
Austin American-Statesman (subscription) - 18 hours ago
By Richard B. Schmitt. WASHINGTON - In an about-face, the Bush administration said Wednesday that it has decided to seek court approval for electronic surveillance it had previously done without warrants.
It appears Bush will not budge on Iraq but is making concessions where he previously had hard stances. He may also acquiesce to democratic demands for minimum wage increase , reducing the country's reliance on imported oil. Last week he also dropped his plans to renominate 3 ultra-conservative judges that the democrats vigorously opposed.
I would like to see more of this compromise and am hopeful that the government can find moderate/centrist ways to govern.
Keep in mind , the surveillance concession is announced just a day before the atty general was to testify before congress and two weeks before the court of appeals rules on upholding the ruling that warrantless surviellance is unconstitutional. The ACLU feels "This move is pure smoke and mirrors to avoid the scrutiny of the courts and Congress, and lawmakers should not be fooled. If the White House now recognizes that the FISA court is the right entity to approve wiretapping, why did the president continue to violate the law for years?"

New years goal

Well I have smoked less than 10 cigarettes today....I usually smoke a pack and a 1/2- I got my toothpicks , gum , lollipops etc;
I even went to the gym for the 1st time in months. I`m already HUGE...
o.k thats my belly but anyway
In order to cut down on smoking I had to quit my 2 dunkin donuts turbo-iced coffees a day habit. Lori picked me up some starbucks espresso cans and some sobe adrenaline so I won`t have caffeine withdrawal as well as nic fits--Unfortunately they don`t seem to wake me up like D-D but doin` that for a few days I should get used to it -- we`ll see
Modest goals first - I want to keep myself well under a pack a day and get used to stalling when I have the urge to smoke--
Wish me luck

Bush orders the storming of an iranian embassy in Iraq
Within the hour of last nights speech about a troop surge , and preventing Iranian and Syrian
intervention , , US forces raided an Iranian consulate in northern Iraq, arresting five diplomats and staff and taking computers and files.
Only weeks before Bush said he will consider all plans of action on Iraq , and seek bi-partisan consensus on an Iraqi plan , Bush stubbornly ignores all aspects of ISG , including dialogue with Iran and Syria , and effectively declares war on them with the arrival of an additional aircraft carrier strike force and defensive patriot missiles to protect allies (this means Israel) , and then this arresting of "legal" diplomats in the country.
This is scary.
I am not at this time stating he is wrong , or that I agree with attempting to dialogue with Iran and Syria but .......this is scary
I was reading something on MSNBC and Tim Russert came away the thought that Bush has hinted on a wider war which would include Iran.
Scary

J E T S..i really thought we had a chance today. We played tough for most of the game but new england just came up with bigger plays . Season over ...just like that
But... remember the Jets were not expected to win more than 4 games and we went 10-6 .. This is something to build on.
After the game , regarding the season Mangini said “I was most proud of the effort that they put in, the way that they worked, the way that they came together as a team, and the progress that they made collectively,”
The jets have lots of caproom , a new attitude and lots of young players to build around . We are going to be a team to contend next year and on .

UFC 66 -
Did the payperview thing at my house last night for another killer UFC - \
A lot of good fights - not GREAT fights but good ones - all ofthem
Matt and his bro - ryan came over (ryans leaving for iraq in a few days - Good Luck Ryan - give em hell) + some other cats including Chris who is helping me fix this websites boards
Chuck Liddell finally shut Tito`s big mouth who admitted that he just can`t beat Liddell. The fight was almost stopped at the end of the 1st round but Big John was good enough to let it go - Rnd 2 was pretty lame and then Chuck beat on him in round 3 and won it
I was disappointed that Forest Lost - I was hoping for a 3 round brawl but Mean Jardine caught Forest and stunned him and ended the fight convincingly

Maine - Acadia National Park
A few weeks back , Lori and I went on a long weekend trip to Maine , we stayed in Bar Harbor in a nice bed and breakfast and spent a few days in Acadia National Park. Beautiful , man - beautiful
The park is basically a driving park , driving winding scenic roads throughtout the park (27 mile loop trail + some further less popular but just as beautiful areas )
Every other turn is a beautiful bluff overlooking mountains , or ocean , or the fjord (steep walled inlet of a sea created by glacial gouging.) or lakes , or just ridiculous views of ridiculous distances - There are a number of Site Attraction stops , such as Cadilac mountain where you drive to the top of one of the tallest peaks in the northeast , Thunder hole where the ocean meets the rocky surf , at one point we were on a trail that climbed a mountain where our view was of a lake beneath us , the fjord to the left of us(i didn`t know the us had fjords , i thought that was icelands claim to fame ), over other mountains , Islands and the ocean beyond in a 280 degree radius , unfreakin believable -http://www.acadia.national-park.com/
Did a lot of hiking, and checking out some natural beauty of the world.
bar harbor is a tourist town with all the specialty shops hawking all sorts of crap and some pretty good restaurants- not much in the way of bars but we had a couple of drinks in a few spots
The bed and breakfast was cool , nice place , nice room - good breakfast - we stayed at the primrose inn. http://www.primroseinn.com/

Jets Draft
Jets shored up their offensive liner with their 2 number one pics , A top tackle and the top center in the draft. Its not flashy like a QB or RB , but you need a line if you want a QB or RB to do anything productive

Its almost spring
April is here , we have a few nice warm days ...woohoo
Lori and I went hiking the last 2 weekends , this weekend the hiking was great , last weekend ....well...
We went to middletown ct , and hiked a trail called bear hill loop. It was to be a 4mile , moderately difficult trail. Well , about 5 miles in we realized that this damn trail was not LOOPING... and by moderately difficult , they meant at points we are on our hands and knees climbing up or down rocy faces. Then....
It starts to downpour ...Hard. Now I`m in a bit of a panic as we were COMPLETELY UNPREPARED for a real hike , I left my phone in the car , we had one 12 oz water , no backpack , flashlight , layer of clothes , compass , blah blah blah , All those things your supposed to have if you are hiking.
Well we find another trail that seemed to be going in the direction we wanted , Down and out...we walk this trail at like 20 miles an hour ...I may be exaggerating. And then ...
We find a road ....woo hoo , hee
This is NOT the road by our car ... This was NOT the Loop !
The road goes both ways as far as the eye can see , NOWHERE
I pick a direction
Left
Walk Walk WAlk WALK
2 1/2 miles later we see what looks like civilization
Its not
Its a pratt and whitney plant - and a DEAD END
Turn around
WALK WALK WALK WALK
back to where we started
Keep walking ...1 mile later we are at the road that takes us to our car
2.5 more miles
UPHILL (no lie , this time i`m not exaggerating)
A half marathon and 5+ hours later we end our hike and hop in the car
NOW we have a hiking backpack , a gps navigator , my phone always , first aid kit , flashlights , batteries , maps , water bottle , etc; etc;
Today we hike , with our stuff
We go to burlington ct , Sessions wildlife Park
3 miles , It actually is a real loop and the entire trail is gravel laid.
We don`t really need the gps system
We bring it all anyway
It was a pretty cool trail , had a lot of side trails (in and out style) that had Blind overlooks at dams , wetlands , beaver dams , tree and bird sanctuarys etc;
like the zoo , it had a bunch of signs with animal or habitat blurbs and info
The reason I picked this trail was the waterfalls , which didn`t disappoint
Not super long , tall , large or voluminous but was still one of the prettiest falls we`ve seen (appx 10-12)
Split boulders allowed 3 fingers of downward drops , in between sharp rocks and down a pretty stream. It was pretty neat
That was why we hike...
oh yeah , hit a nice chili cheese dog shack on the way home

Bday Weekend
Had a great bday weekend , took Lori up to a bed and breakfast Inn in Conway New Hampshire , about a 4 hour drive. Its beautiful up there , we took a scenic route thru the mountains (kanagmangus highway) and hit a few stops ...two easy hike in frozen waterfalls. REally cool. I`ll post some of the pics next week
we stayed at the 1785 inn , and it definitely was an old inn. The upstairs rooms were sort of cockeyed with a gentle sloping from one end to the other. It was a nice place and has been updated , but underneath it all is a 200 yr old skeleton that has sagged and leaned and swelled. Great breakfast , and nice bar right downstairs with a friendly bartender. We ate dinner there one night too and I had Elk Steak ... KILLER KILLER steak dudes and dudettes...If you ever have the opportunity ...take it
I did some skiing at cranmore mountain , real easy but fun mountain, ...we did a little hiking but it was kinda cold and Lori pussed out on a hike to see the Flume Gorge which is supposed to be a beautiful waterfall and deep ravine.
Anyway , it was nice to get out of the burbs and into the country. There wasn`t enough cover to go cross-country skiing so probably have to try that out next year.
talk at ya`ll soon

And they think we don`t understand them ?
Palestine elects terrorist organization - Hamas into government power
Iraqis picked shiite leader Al-Jaafari over a moderate as a interim prime minister , , because he aligned himself with the violent theocrist cleric -Al Sadyr (the man who staged the uprising against the army and hid their militia and weapons in mosques daring us to fire)
Iran (truly a theocracy run by radical clerics)- the people removed former pro - western (albeit ineffective) president and voted in Ahmadineja , a radical who promptly became the fundamentalist mouthpiece for the mullahs. They promptly threaten the world with nuclear aquisition.
The muslim world`s ridiculous over reaction rioting in response to the danish-cartoons have now caused nearly 20 deaths and millions of dollars of damage to embassies .
Remember the riots in afghanistan from the bogus story of interrogators flushing Korans down a toilet (Proved to be a lie)
In France Muslims continue to riot nearly every other week in response to various serious offenses such as the ban on head scarves in public schools.
An indonesian islamic court sentences two Australian 20ish yr old drug smugglers to death by Firing squad (australian gov`t is appealing for clemency)
A turkish movie was released this week depicting american soldiers fighting Turkish special forces (based on the true story of turks who crossed the border to put down the kurds in iraq) sporting Mohawks , brandishing bibles , shooting children point-black. Also shows US doctors harvesting organs from dead soldiers and shipping them to Israel.
Islamic Jihadis have killed schoolchildren in Beslan, Chechneya, which was part of the former Soviet Union. They have beheaded little Christian girls in Indonesia. They have killed Western tourists in Bali.
September 11th
I think we understand them just fine.

The Lost Boards
Knowledge and Reason : There are those that believe .....
The pursuit of knowledge is its own goal , is its own virtue. "Knowledge is knowledge about reality. Its base is perception, and its method is reason." The attainment of knowledge primarily through the use of the one unrivaled gift of mankind , Reason ,is in and of itself a moral right. It is beauty. It is its own reward.
There are those that believe knowledge is a weapon to be wielded at the ignorant. There are those that believe that the flaunting of knowledge is self-empowering. There are those who present opinions , feelings , vague notions , or Instincts , and call it knowledge.
It is not.
Reason is the means of integrating our perceptions into concept and gaining knowledge. The method of reason applies the use of logic, deduction, and induction. There are no feelings , Reason is absolute and should only produce emotions at its creation and existence and its beauty , not at fancy espousings , not at its ability to "make one look good" when flaunting a pretense of it. That is whats called Rhetoric , which can be used to attain knowledge when wielded by two or more open and reasoning minds, but more often is simply argumentative, aimed not to
gain knowledge but to confuse it ; the arguing itself is the "Showdog" and the prize.
I know a friend who lost his proof of his knowledge , and he was lost. I felt for him not because of his actual loss but for his misconception that knowledge , or genius , is something that must be "shown" or "flaunted" for it to have worth. By the very definitions I put forth , this is absolutely untrue , and if held as truth by my poor friend , sheds light on his epistemology , and shows it to be mere sophistry.
